Den Leader Responsibilities
The following lists the responsibilities of Tiger Cub, Cub Scout, and Webelos Den Leaders in Pack 39:
- Provide leadership in carrying out the appropriate Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos program.
- Work with the Den parents to organize, schedule and plan Den meetings.
- Dens should plan to meet twice a month.
- Recruit an Assistant Den Leader and to help manage the Den.
- Plan the Den meeting agendas to ensure that the requirements for rank advancement are achieved in a timely manner.
- Ensure that Den parents are clear on what is required for rank advancement, what will be accomplished at Den meetings, and what needs to be accomplished outside the Den meetings.
- Ensure that Den meetings occur as scheduled or are re-scheduled.
- Keep accurate records of meetings, attendance and awards earned.
- Effectively deal with any issues affecting the Den’s success and ask for assistance if necessary.
- Use Boys’ Life and Scouting magazines, Cub Scout Program Helps, the boys’ program books, and other Cub Scouting literature as sources for program ideas.
- Maintain a good relationship with your Cub Scouts; encourage them to participate and to earn advancement awards.
- Develop a good working relationship with Den parents. Involve them in running the Den and assign meetings at each members home. Assist parents as needed in preparing and running Den meetings.
- Ensure Den meetings have at least two adults present at all times.
- Provide feedback when requested to the Cub Master and/or Pack Committee on how the Den is performing including:
- Number of meetings
- Attendance at meetings
- Awards earned
- Issues affecting the Den’s success
- Complete Den Leader Fast Start Training and Cub Scout Leader Basic Training.
- Fast Start Training can be completed online.
- Cub Scout Leader Basic Training is at scheduled times and we can schedule Pack specific training, if needed.
- Attend monthly Pack 39 Committee meetings (also called Parent’s Meeting) or send a representative from your Den.
- Support the policies of the Boy Scouts of America.
Pack Meeting Etiquette
- Scouts and Den leaders should come to the Pack meeting in the proper uniform
- Class A is standard for most meetings
- Scouts – formal blue uniform – shirt & pants – hat is optional
- Den Leaders – tan Boy Scout uniform
- Class B will be allowed at some meetings – this will be communicated in the meeting announcement.
- Pack 39 T-shirt for Scouts and adults.
- Class A is standard for most meetings
- Den Leaders are to lead and manage the Den in its participation at Pack meetings.
- Maintain your Den in an orderly and respectful manner at the Pack meetings.
- Inform your scouts and parents of the rules:
- No running
- No unsupervised play outside the cafeteria, in the gym, or in the hallways.
- Do not play outside on guard rails.
- Travel to/from restroom is OK
- Ensure that inappropriate talking and other distractions are minimized – this includes parents.
- Prepare your Den for its participation at the Pack meeting including setup / cleanup, flag ceremonies, and skits. Send reminders to ensure strong participation.
- Arrive a few minutes early and provide a gathering or pre-meeting activity for your Den. Have a way to wrap it up quickly when the meeting starts.
