Training

Cub Scout leader training falls into several categories:

  • Required Leader Training
    • Fast Start Training: This required course covers the basics of the Scouting program. To complete this training, you can check out and watch a video from the Council office – but most people complete the course online.
    • New Leader Essentials Training: This required course gives greater detail about the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. Instructors will use videos and discussions during the 90-minute training session. This course is administered at the district level, and leaders can attend any district’s course.
    • New Leader Specific training: This required course goes into greater detail about your specific leadership position. For example, if you’re a Cubmaster, you’ll cover topics and information that is specific to the job of Cubmaster. Same idea if you’re a Den Leader or Pack Committee Member. This course is also administered at the district level, and leaders can attend any district’s course.
    • Youth Protection Training: This required course will give you the Boy Scouts of America’s policies and procedures to protect its members from child abuse. You can take the course in a classroom setting in your district, or complete it online.
  • Optional, but valuable, Leader Training includes, but is not limited to the following:
    • Climb On Safely
    • Safe Swim Defense
    • Safety Afloat
    • Trek Safely
    • Weather Hazards
    • Scout Parents Fast Start
    • Climbing Instructor Training
